Area development groups

The West District is one of five historic junior cricket districts in Scotland.  In addition to the West, the other districts making up the old tapestry that was the cricketing map of Scotland were East, South, Central and North.

And the West District still exists as regards Cricket Scotland's development work.  Its West Community Development Manager, Tim Hart, has an overview for the governing body's cricket development in the west and south-west of the country, his geographical remit stretching as far north as Helensburgh, east to Cumbernauld and Coatbridge, south to Dumfries and the borders, and west as far as Prestwick and Ayr.

The district is divided into six geographical areas as regards much of the development work.  Area Development Groups act as interfaces between Cricket Scotland and the clubs, each area comprising a cluster of between three and six clubs.  The areas are:

Ayrshire;

Clyde;

Dumfries & Galloway;

North Glasgow;

South Glasgow; and

Lanarkshire.

Each year there are inter-area matches and/or development sessions, these forming an important part of the "Player Pathway" along which young players move, from club cricket all the way to national age-group squads and honours.

Note: at present a number of clubs affiliated to the WDJCU do not have junior sections and/or permanent home grounds.  These clubs are, as a result, currently not active members of the geographically-based development groups.  They do, however, have access to Cricket Scotland and its development staff.  The clubs concerned are:
